Stop Searching for the “Best” Travel Credit Card. Ask This Instead

Most people ask:

“What’s the best travel credit card?”

That’s the wrong question.

The better one?

What’s the best card for you?

Because the right card isn’t about perks someone else brags about on Instagram. It’s about your spending, your travel habits, and your goals.

And here’s the good news: you don’t need a financial advisor to figure it out. You just need to ask the right questions, and I’ve built a ChatGPT prompt that does exactly that.

This is the same one I give my friends and family when they want a credit card recommendation that actually fits their lifestyle, not some cookie-cutter list or influencer referral link.

It’s clear. It’s personal. And it works.

How to Use It

Just copy and paste the prompt below into ChatGPT (or any smart AI assistant you use). Fill in your own answers where indicated. You’ll get a customized, prioritized list of cards based on how you actually travel and spend.

You can even ask follow-up questions like:

  • Why did you rank this card first?
  • How would this change if I started a business?
  • Would this work better if I traveled more internationally?

Remember: great advice lives in the follow-up.

The ChatGPT Prompt (Copy & Customize):

I need you to act as my travel credit card advisor.

I want cards that help me achieve:

👉 [insert your travel goal — e.g., flying business class, staying at luxury hotels, earning elite status]

My top priorities are:

• [e.g., flexible points like Amex/Chase/Bilt]

• [e.g., strong airline or hotel transfer partners]

• [e.g., lounge access, trip protections, dining/travel multipliers]

• [e.g., elite benefits or free night certificates]

I spend about:

• $____/month on rent

• $____/month on dining

• $____/month on groceries

• $____/month on gas

• $____/month on travel

• $____/month on other spending

I travel ___ times a year for work and ___ times for leisure, mostly to: 👉 [insert destinations or regions]

When I fly, I typically prefer: [ ] Economy [ ] Premium Economy [ ] Business/First Class

I don’t mind paying an annual fee, but I want to keep it under $____.

I’ve opened ___ new credit cards in the past 24 months. (Some banks, like Chase, typically limit you to 5 new personal cards across all banks within a 2-year period.)

I currently hold the following cards: 👉 [list your current credit cards]

I’m open to business credit cards if eligible: [Yes/No]

This strategy is for: [ ] A specific trip I’m planning for __________ (month/year) [ ] A long-term travel rewards setup

Please generate a prioritized list of cards to open next, including:

• Why it ranks where it does

• The best use cases and benefits for my travel style

• Ideal redemptions (points/miles/hotels/airlines)

• Any smart combos or stacking strategies I should consider

One Last Thing

Don’t stop at the first answer. Ask questions. Push back. Adjust the inputs. Strategy isn’t one-size-fits-all—and your best results will come from being just a little more curious than most.
